Privacy at chart.video
The short version
The numbers you chart are often the sensitive kind: sales before they’re announced, survey results, a budget. chart.video never receives them. Your browser reads the data, draws the chart and encodes the video, and the file is saved straight back to your device.
Your data and files
When you paste cells, open a CSV, Excel or JSON file, or type into the data grid, the text is parsed by code running in this page. When you export, every frame is drawn on a canvas and encoded inside your browser with the WebCodecs API (or, for GIFs, a small encoder that ships with the site). Your logo and music are decoded the same way. None of the numbers, labels, titles, file names, images or sound is sent to chart.video or to anyone else.
Links you ask us to load
If you use From a link, your browser fetches that address itself, directly from the site that hosts it (for example Google, for a Google Sheets link). chart.video’s servers are not involved and never see the link or the data. The other site receives a normal request from your browser, including your IP address, under its own privacy policy. We send the request without cookies and without a referrer, so it learns only that the request came from chart.video, not which page you were on. A Google Sheet must be published to the web or shared with anyone who has the link for this to work, which makes it public; don’t publish anything private.
What is kept in your browser
- Your charts. Each chart (its data, settings and a small preview image) is saved in this site’s IndexedDB storage so a closed tab or a reload doesn’t lose it. If you added a logo or music, a copy is kept with the chart. The 20 most recent charts are kept; older ones are deleted automatically, and you can delete any of them from Continue a chart on the start card.
- Light or dark mode, if you choose one, in local storage (
vt-theme). - Your statistics choice, in local storage (
vt-consent), so the notice isn’t shown again and an objection is remembered.
This stays on your device until you delete it. Clearing this site’s data in your browser’s settings removes every chart at once.
Downloads from other servers
The studio’s code, typefaces, sample datasets and encoders are all served from chart.video. Working on a chart makes no requests to other servers, apart from a link you ask it to load. The sample data comes from the World Bank (credited on each chart) or was written for this site.
Hosting
chart.video is hosted on Cloudflare. To deliver pages and keep the site safe from abuse, Cloudflare processes technical details of each request, such as your IP address, browser and the page asked for, in short-lived logs. This is needed to run the site and rests on our legitimate interest in providing it securely. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
Visit statistics
We look at how the site is used so we know which charts, exports and guides are worth improving.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics and Ahrefs Web Analytics count visits and measure page speed without cookies and without identifying you.
- Google Analytics 4 records the pages you view and a few product events: for example which chart type or theme was picked, whether data came from a paste, a file or a link, the table’s size in rounded bands, and which kind of export was made and how long it took. It never receives your numbers, labels, titles, file names, links, logo, music or anything typed.
Google Analytics is used only for statistics: not for advertising, with Google signals and advertising features turned off and every advertising consent signal denied. Event data is kept for 14 months. Google may process it in the United States under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. See Google’s privacy policy and how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Our legal basis is legitimate interests (measuring and improving the site). The Analytics cookies rely on the statistical-purposes exception that the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 added to the UK’s Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations: such cookies need no consent as long as you’re told about them and can object. For visitors in the European Economic Area and Switzerland, Analytics cookies stay off.
Cookies and how to switch them off
Google Analytics sets two first-party cookies, _ga and _ga_<id>,
lasting up to two years. A short notice tells you about them on your first visit. To object
at any time, open Cookie settings in the
footer and choose Turn off analytics; this browser remembers the choice. If
your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as an objection and keep
Analytics off. We don’t sell personal data and we show no adverts.
Who runs chart.video
chart.video is an independent, self-funded project. It has no accounts and holds no record that identifies you.
Your rights
You can ask for access to, correction or erasure of personal data, restrict or object to its use, and ask for a portable copy. Your data and charts never leave your device, so you control them directly: delete charts from the start card or clear the site’s data. For statistics, objecting in Cookie settings stops collection, and Google’s own tools cover what it holds. You can complain to a data protection authority; in the UK that is the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).
Changes
When the way chart.video handles data changes, this page changes too and the date at the top is updated.
