An animated bar chart builds its bars on screen instead of showing them all at once, which gives each number a moment to land. Open the Revenue growth template below for a stacked column chart, or pick Bars on any page, then paste your own table and press Export video.

The Reveal setting decides the rhythm: Together grows every bar at once, One by one builds the categories left to right, and By series brings in each series in turn. Value labels count up with the bars, and stacked columns show their totals on top. If your values change over time rather than across categories, a bar chart race is the better fit.

How to make an animated bar chart

  1. Start from Bars

Select Open the Revenue growth template, or choose Bars under Pick a chart to start.

  2. Paste your table

In Data, use Paste data. Put categories (months, products, survey answers) down the first column and one column per series.

  3. Choose the build

In Chart, pick Grouped or Stacked under Layout, Columns or Bars under Direction, and how the bars appear under Reveal.

  4. Style and time it

Set the words and Theme in Style; in Motion, Time per bar sets how quickly each category follows the last.

  5. Export

In Export, choose Video (MP4), GIF or Image (PNG) and press the export button, then download.

Grouped, stacked or one bar per item

With several series (say Subscriptions, Services and Hardware by quarter) Grouped puts their bars side by side and Stacked piles them into one column per category, with the total on top. Turn on 100 % stacked under More options to compare shares instead of sizes.

A two-column list such as Fruit, Sales becomes one bar per item, each in its own colour. Long category names read better as horizontal Bars; short ones like months suit Columns.

Getting the timing right

  • Together suits a quick reveal before a voiceover makes the point.
  • One by one walks through a sequence, such as twelve months of sales, at Time per bar each.
  • By series shows how each part adds to a stack: base first, then the layers.

Easing under Motion → More options changes how the bars settle: ease out lands gently, a soft spring adds a little life without bouncing past the value.

Animated bar chart questions

Can I make the bars grow one at a time?

Yes. In the Chart step set Reveal to One by one, then adjust Time per bar in the Motion step.

Can I export the animated bar chart as a GIF?

Yes. Choose GIF in the Export step, pick Small (480) or Medium (720) and a frame rate, and press Export GIF.

How do I show percentages instead of totals?

Choose Stacked under Layout, then turn on 100 % stacked under More options in the Chart step.

Can I show negative values?

Yes, grouped bars grow down from zero for negative values. Stacked bars put negative parts below the axis.

Does it work with data from PowerPoint or Excel?

Copy the chart’s data cells in Excel (or the datasheet behind a PowerPoint chart) and use Paste data. The Excel guide covers both routes.

Is there a watermark?

No. The only logo on the video is yours, if you add one in Style.
