# Pie chart maker

Type a few labels and numbers and get a pie chart with every percentage worked out and labelled. Switch to a donut, download a PNG or SVG, or export the slices sweeping in as a video.

To make a pie chart, open the **Budget pie** template below and replace its rows with yours: a label and a number on each row. The percentages are calculated for you, so the numbers can be counts, pounds or hours; they don’t need to add up to 100\. Then export an **Image (PNG)**.

Each slice is labelled with its name and share, and tiny slices are gathered into “Other” so the chart never ends up with slivers nobody can read. The same pie can play as a video, with the slices sweeping round one after another; the [animated pie chart](https://chart.video/animated-pie-chart) page covers pies that change from year to year.

## How to make a pie chart

1. ### Open the template
Select **Open the Budget pie template**, or choose **Pie** under **Pick a chart to start**.
2. ### Enter the slices
In **Data**, choose **Edit data** to type, or **Paste data** for cells from a spreadsheet: a label column and a number column.
3. ### Pie or donut
In **Chart**, choose **Pie** or **Donut** under **Shape**. Turn on **Numbers on the chart** under **More options** to show each value beside its percentage.
4. ### Style it
In **Style**, add a **Title** and **Source** and pick colours; **Colour-blind safe** is one of the palettes.
5. ### Download
In **Export**, choose **Image (PNG)** or **Vector image (SVG)**, a **Format** such as 1:1 for social posts, then **Export image** and **Download image**.

## Percentages and labels, done for you

Enter raw numbers and each slice’s share is worked out from the total, shown to whole per cents (or one decimal place for slices under 10 %). If your numbers are already percentages that add up to 100, they’re treated as shares and the total isn’t printed.

* Slices are drawn largest first, clockwise from the top, which is how most readers expect to compare them.
* More than eight slices, or slices under 2.5 % of the whole, are grouped into a grey “Other” slice.
* With **Numbers on the chart** on, each label reads like “31% · £31”.

## Pie or donut?

They show the same thing. A donut leaves room in the middle for the total or a key figure, and many people find its arc lengths slightly easier to compare than wedge angles. A full pie reads as one whole object, which suits simple two- or three-way splits.

## When a pie chart is the wrong choice

Pie charts work when there are a handful of parts of one whole and one or two clearly dominate. They work badly when slices are close in size, when there are more than six or so, or when you need to compare several wholes side by side.

In those cases, a sorted [bar graph](https://chart.video/bar-graph-maker) is easier to read, a stacked bar shows several wholes at once, and a waffle chart (100 squares) makes shares concrete; all three are a click away under **Chart**.

## Download, copy or animate

**Image (PNG)** gives a crisp picture of the finished pie; 1:1 suits Instagram and slides with a square placeholder, 16:9 a full slide. **Sharp (2×)** doubles the pixels for print, **Copy image** pastes it straight into Word, Google Docs or a chat, and **Vector image (SVG)** is editable in design apps. For video, the slices sweep in one by one and settle with their percentages.

## Pie chart questions

### How do I make a pie chart with percentages?

Enter labels and numbers in **Data**; each slice’s percentage is calculated and labelled automatically.

### Do my numbers have to add up to 100?

No. Counts, money or hours all work; the shares are worked out from the total.

### Can I make a donut chart?

Yes. Choose **Donut** under **Shape** in the Chart step.

### How many slices can a pie chart have?

Any number in your data, but the chart shows at most eight; smaller slices are grouped into “Other” so every label stays readable.

### Is this pie chart maker free?

Yes, with no account and no watermark. PNG, SVG and video exports are all free.

### Can I show the actual values as well as percentages?

Yes. Turn on **Numbers on the chart** under **More options** in the Chart step.
